Mustard had the pleasure of speaking with Carter Rubin. Together we discussed their influences, The Voice, their newest single “Mess me up”, and so much more!
1. Mustard wonders what was your relationship with music growing up?
Music has always been a big part of my life. Think I was singing before I was talking! Performing & music is how I always expressed myself. It feels like what I was born to do.
2. Justin Bieber, Harry Styles, and Shawn Mendes are some of your influences. What are some deep cuts from each artist do you recommend every human listen to?
The songs that really hit for me are 2 Much & Lonely – Justin, Wonder & Lost in Japan – Shawn & Sign of the Times & Kiwi – Harry
3. You were the youngest winner on “The Voice.” Can you share some of your highlights of being on The Voice?
The whole experience at a young age taught me a lot. My best moments were meeting such amazing people. There was so much talent. I met some of my best friends there. Gwen was an incredible coach & her support for my career means so much to me.
4. How has national television along with social media helped you as an artist? Do you have a favorite social media platform?
As a young artist I love TikTok. The platform is so good for making connections with fans, other artists & reaching a new audience.
5. What is your songwriting process?
I write based on what I’m going through at the time or what I’m feeling. Usually I’ll come up with a few lyrics first, put them in my notes app & then find a melody. I’ll sit at the piano & just try to see what feels right. It’s a process that takes me some time but I enjoy it. It’s therapy for me & hopefully people can relate to what I come up with.
6. 2021 saw the release of your debut single “horoscope.” Was this single inspired by an actual relationship of yours?
It was one of those young love, teenage crush type of things.
7. You followed up “horoscope” with “time machine.” Could you share more about this single?
Time Machine I wrote by myself & I’m really proud of it. It’s very honest. I wanted to be vulnerable & real with it. Hope people can feel the emotion & connect to it.
8. Have any scientific institutions reached out to you to help develop a time machine?
No, not yet!
9. Is “horoscope” and “time machine” inspired by the same individual?
Hmmmm

10. You recently released your newest single “Mess me up.” What was the inspiration behind “Mess Me Up?” Could you share more?
I wanted to write about first love, when you are still trying to figure it out. What the other person is feeling, what I’m feeling…the rollercoaster you go on. You try to play it cool, but not sure where you’re at with the other person sometimes. This song has my vibe. I think it’s real & kids my age can feel it. It has some edge & good energy to it. Hope everyone is feeling this one!
11. What are some bad decisions that felt good at the time? Should humans make bad decisions often?
Falling for girls who weren’t actually good for me. It happens, I’m young! Bad decisions can lead you to the good ones.
12. What is next for Carter Rubin?
Excited for what is coming! I have more new music I’ll be releasing. More connecting with my fans! Want to grow up with them. What I’m writing & my music is hopefully making people feel something they can relate to. Want to build a real community of fans that feel like friends.
13. Where can readers listen to your music?
Spotify, Apple Music & all music platforms. @carterjrubin on TikTok, Instagram, YouTube.
