Mustard had the pleasure of speaking with Scarlet Tantrum! Together we discussed their influences, open mics, their latest single “Lilac Dreams”, and so much more!

1. Mustard is grateful to have you join them at Music Shelf. How are you doing today?

I am doing pretty great today! I mean, of course I’m doing great, I’m getting interviewed by Mustard.

2. Mustard wonders what was your relationship with music growing up?

Music has always been super close to my heart. I’ve always loved to sing and dance to songs when I was little. Music has helped me through a lot of hard times, I write music to express myself. I really don’t know what my life would be like if I couldn’t write, sing, or listen to music.

3. Who (or what) influences you?

I would say I’m heavily influenced by the Alternative/Pop sound. I really like the grunge sound but I also like upbeat music that you can dance and move your body to. So as for Artists that I’m influenced by I would say Billie Eilish is a big one as well as Paramore and Melanie Martinez. They are all so unique in their own ways but I really love all of their sounds as well as their music styles. So those three definitely inspire me with my music right now as well as in future EPs/Albums.

4. Is there a song or album that had a significant impact on you?

I would say there’s no specific song or album but anything by Melanie Martinez has really impacted me as a person as well as a musician. Her song writing style is so unique and the meanings behind her songs are very deep and well thought out. I have been a big fan of hers for almost 7 years now and I really appreciate her music and her as an artist.

5. According to your Instagram biography everyone is welcome. As guests do we need to bring any snacks or refreshments?

You are correct, Everyone is Welcome. And of course it is required to bring snacks and drinks. Snacks make everything better.

6. What was it take place in North Carolina’s Home Grown Voice Talent Search?

It was such a wonderful experience to be one of the contestants in the North Carolina HomeGrown Voice Talent Search. I met so many incredibly talented musicians and also got to experience what it was like to competitively sing in front of judges. It was definitely a great experience for me and for the future of Scarlet Tantrum. I was so honored to be announced as the third place finalist in the competition.

7. You have taken part in multiple open mic events. How do you prepare for an open mic night?

I actually am the host of an open mic, Meaning, I run the entire thing. It is held at Swank Coffee Shop in Southern Pines NC. Before I was the host I was a regular attendee of the Open Mic at Swank. The old host was moving away and had passed the open mic onto me. But when I was an Attendee at the open mic I would use it to help me get out of my shell and get comfortable singing in front of a crowd. I have struggled with a lot of social anxiety as well as stagefright so going to the open mic helped me alot with controlling my anxiety while on stage. Now that I am the host I always try to make sure everyone knows they are welcome and that this is an uplifting and positive space to get out of your comfort zone.

8. Do you have a favorite open mic night you’ve done?

I honestly don’t have a favorite open mic. We get so many different people who offer different things on the stage. We have had musicians, poets, comedians, violinists, story tellers, actors, etc. Each open mic is different and they are all always super fun. I love how diverse the open mic is.

9. How would you describe a Scarlet Tantrum live performance?

I would describe a Scarlet Tantrum Performance as in your face, unapologetic, with head-bopping energy and hard-hitting lyrics.

10. Earlier this year saw the release of your debut single “don’t worry darling.” What was the inspiration behind this single?

The Inspiration behind my first single released this past January was how much you can love someone and yet still have that anxiety about losing them in any sort of way. So the song goes back and forth as if it’s a couple conversing with each other. The chorus is your partner reassuring you that they are by your side no matter what because they love you. Hence “Don’t Worry Darling”

11. Did the Harry Styles and Florence Pugh film of the same name influence this single?

My single Don’t Worry Darling has no correlation with the Harry Styles and Florence Pugh movie.

12. Last week you released your newest single “Lilac Dreams.” Could you share more about this single?

It is super exciting to have my second single out. I actually wrote Lilac Dreams in 2020 during Covid Isolation. I’m sure most everyone else was not in a good mental state. I wanted to write an optimistic song saying that things will get better and the light will shine once more. And so the “Dream” that I am talking about with the song is the dream about things getting better in life.

13. Purple lilacs symbolize a human’s first emotions of love. Would you say this was a factor with your new single?

No, That was not a factor within the song.

14. What is next for Scarlet Tantrum?

I will continue to publish my music to platforms for people to listen to. I’m hoping to get an EP out this year. My dream is to one day travel and perform shows and share my music with people and for them to appreciate and relate to my lyrics.

15. Where can readers listen to your music?

You can listen to my music on nearly all streaming platforms! But as for the main platforms it is on Spotify, Apple Music, Pandora, Youtube music, Amazon Music, and many more!!
